As men, we hate going to the doctor. You can chalk it up to pride, stubbornness, laziness, business or all of the above. But, there’s no denying that guys and check-ups or physicals don’t go hand-in-hand. Unfortunately, if you are over 40 and out of shape then you need to overcome that stubbornness and get a physical.

The Need for a Physical

After the age of 40, various physical ailments tend to gradually set in. Additionally, if you are out of shape, the risk for serious health conditions increase. And, the cherry on top of this sundae is the chance that you may also have lower than normal testosterone levels which can play a role in you being out of shape.

A physical will allow your doctor to do a complete checkup on your overall health and determine if there are any health issues that need to be addressed. It’s also a great starting point for making those positive changes in order to live a healthy, functional lifestyle.

Screening for Medical Issues

Perhaps, the most important reason to get a physical – health screening. Once we hit our 40’s, risks for health ailments and diseases increase, especially if we are out of shape. Health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol need to be assessed and monitored on a regular basis.

Additionally, things that we never thought about before like prostate and colon cancer need to be assessed and monitored on a regular basis especially if there is a history of this in your family.

Once we cross the threshold of 50, screening for osteoporosis becomes a priority as various risk factors will be assessed.

Can You Hear or See Me Now?

Let’s face it, as we get older, our vision and hearing tend to not work like they used to. Age related vision changes start happening to us by time we reach our mid-40’s. For some of us, it happened a lot sooner. Also, when we hit our 40’s, our hearing begins to slowly decline.

There’s no shame in needing glasses as we get older. The shame is trying to avoid getting glasses and causing more problems for yourself.

The Killer O’s: Overweight and Obesity

Did you know that more than two-thirds of adults are considered overweight or obese? It’s even worse for men. Nearly 75% of adult men are either overweight or obese. Are you kidding me? That number is staggering. If you are out of shape and over 40, then it’s more than likely you are overweight or dipping your toes in the waters of obesity.

Obesity can lead to an onslaught of health problems like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, fatty liver disease and more.

Getting a physical might just be the only way that you come to understand the gravity of your weight issues and just how out of shape you really are.

Low Testosterone

By the time we hit our 40’s, our bodies have already begun to decrease the production of testosterone. In fact, you might already have low levels of testosterone and not even know it. That’s another reason why you should get a complete physical from your doctor.

Low levels of testosterone can have many symptoms: obesity, fatigue, low sex drive, decreased muscle mass and strength, lower bone density, sleep issues, emotional changes and more. That list of possible symptoms should be enough of a reason for you to get off your butts and go get a physical.

Get a Physical!

Why is it that men will obsess over their cars or boats getting annual tune-ups and regular maintenance, but refuse to treat their bodies with the same love and affection? Our bodies are more important than any vehicle or vessel and yet, we don’t take care of them with the same commitment, care and concern.

Now that you are over 40, it’s time for you to really start focusing on your body and how to take care of it. Getting a physical is the best place to start as it will assess your overall health and aid you in determining what lifestyle changes that you need to make.
